How to Take Provinces in EU4 (own & control)

Give yourself ownership of any province with the own command, seize control with control, and core it with add_core in Europa Universalis IV.

Taking land normally means winning a war and paying warscore for each province. The own console command transfers a province outright, control changes who occupies it, and add_core cores it so you keep it cleanly.

How to take provinces in EU4

  1. Open the console.
  2. Type own <province id> <tag> and press Enter to take ownership. Follow up with add_core <province id> <tag> to core it and drop the overextension penalty.

Examples

Find any province's ID on the province IDs page, and the tag of the country to give it to on the country tags page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I give myself a province in EU4?

Use own <province id> <tag>, e.g. own 183 FRA gives France ownership of Paris. Omit the tag to give it to the country you're playing.

What's the difference between own and control?

own transfers permanent ownership of a province, while control only changes who occupies it (the wartime controller). Use control to flip occupation, own to take it for good.

How do I add a core to a province?

Use add_core <province id> <tag>, e.g. add_core 183 FRA. Coring removes the overextension and unrest penalties of holding a province you have no claim on.
