Calvinism in the Netherlands

In a clerical meeting in Dordrecht (1618-1619) hard-line Calvinism was made State-religion. This was the end of a long struggle between a pluralistic and humanitarian faction, the Arminians, and a dogmatic, narrow-minded 'True Calvinistic' faction, the Gomarists. Moritz of Oranien supported the Gomarists, composed mainly of petty bourgeois and farmers, while Oldenbarneveld supported the Arminians, composed of intellectuals and rich bourgeois.
