The Grikos of Italy

Since antiquity, the territories of southern Italy have been inhabited by Greeks, whose ancestors were settlers arriving from the east. Those peoples would see themselves reunited with the rest of the Greek world during the brief Byzantine rule, but even that tie would sever with the recession of the Eastern Roman Empire. Today, those territories are once again held by a Hellenic government, giving reassurances to the local population that their identity and rich history will be preserved under this new rule.
