What happens

The division between the Pope and the Emperor had started in the late 11th century, and technically ended in 1122, but the division between Guelphs and Ghibellines persisted in Italy for centuries afterward, being a constant factor in dividing the city-states internally and keeping Italy weak. The Guelphs were the supporters of the Pope, while the Ghibellines supported the Emperor. In the 15th century, the Guelphs had switched allegiance to the French instead, as they started to take an interest into Italy.
