Abigail Adams

The first Second Lady and the second First Lady, Abigail Adams is the wife of John Adams, the first Vice President, and second President, of the United States. She is an erudite lady with an open mind and great intellect whose husband often seeks her advice on political matters and government. Political opponents refer to her as "Mrs. President" as she is very politically active, especially about women's rights. There is a letter from her to John Adams that says: "...remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.". She advocates for married women's property rights, believes that women should not be content with only being companions to their husbands, that they should not submit to laws not made in their interest and that women should be educated.
