What happens
Gustav III, upon succeeding to the Swedish throne, beheld a nation being sucked down into a maelstrom of chaos by the paralyzing bickering of the Hat and Cap parties. Something had to be done, and soon, or Sweden might share the same fate as poor, unfortunate Poland. So, rather than standing back and watching his nation being torn asunder by Scylla and Carybdis, the King took matters in his own hands and seized power through a bloodless Coup d'état. Thus began the Gustavian period of Swedish history.
