What happens
A conspiracy to kill King Don Jose I (1750-1777) was revealed and prevented, by Marquês de Pombal. Pombal used this event to forge his power into a virtual dictatorship. Pombal was a radical reformer, but he was also very power-hungry and without remorse he hunted down anyone that could threaten him in the name of the King.
