Moses Mendelssohn

The multilingual Jewish scholar and philosopher Moses Mendelssohn is of humble origin. Originally intended to become a rabbi, his religious education, however, led him to our capital, where he has instead risen to become a published author, highly regarded among Christians and Jews alike. His writings and publications, which are made in both German and Hebrew, along with the open discussions taking place even in his own home, are paving the way for tolerance between people on a scale unseen in our nation before. A fascinating person of high intellect and deep thought, some call him a 'German Socrates'.
