Quick Overview

The command tributary in Europa Universalis IV is used to make a certain country a Tributary State.

When a country becomes a Tributary State, it becomes essentially a vassal or subordinate of another country, known as the Overlord.

This means the Tributary State must pay regular tribute to the Overlord, either in economic resources or in manpower for their armies, while the Overlord provides protection.

In-Depth Description

The tributary command in Europa Universalis IV (EU4) allows you to turn a specified country into a tributary state.

A tributary state is less autonomous than a vassal or colony, but more so than annexed territory.

In terms of actual gameplay, making a country your tributary means that every year, they will give you a certain amount of manpower, money or monarch points (you choose which), but in exchange, they are technically outside of your realm, unlike vassals or personal union partners.

To use the command, you'd have to type tributary [country tag] into the console, replacing [country tag] with the three-letter code of the country you want to make your tributary.

This command is useful because it allows you to expand indirectly - instead of directly ruling the territory yourself, you can have a friendly country ruling the territory that faithfully sends resources to you. This saves you administrative capacity and the effort of integrating the territory.

You should use this command when you want to extract resources from a country without dealing with the added complexity and cost of vassalizing or annexing it.

How to Open the Command Console

In EU4, cheats are executed from the command console, a text box that you type commands into.

To open the command console press the ~(tilde) key, which is typically located under ESC (escape).

If your keyboard does not have that key, or pressing ~ does not work, try the following keys:

  • ~
  • SHIFT + 2
  • SHIFT + 3
  • ALT + 2 + 1

Type your command into the console, and then press ENTER .
