Quick Overview

The refresh_knowledge command in Europa Universalis IV is a debugging command used by the game developers.

When this command is executed, the game recalculates information regarding gameplay elements such as a nation's neighbor countries, its rules for acquiring new ideas (which are similar to technology upgrades in some other strategy games), and other related factors.

In essence, it's a way to update the game's internal knowledge and calculations based on the current state of the game world.

In-Depth Description

The refresh_knowledge command in Europa Universalis IV (EU4) is used to refresh or recalibrate a lot of in-game dynamic data, much of which is related to the diplomacy and ideas of the game.

When you issue the refresh_knowledge command in the game's console, it recalculates various aspects of the global game state.

This includes recalculating who the neighbours of each nation are, what diplomatic rules apply to each nation, the status of ideas (a measure of how advanced or primitive a nation is compared to its neighbours), and much more.

This command can be extremely useful in certain situations.

For example, after a big war that changes a lot of borders, the game's understanding of who is a neighbour to whom may be outdated, and you may want to use this command to update this.

Also, if you have been playing for a long time and a lot of game dynamics have changed over time, this command can help to ensure that the game's understanding of these dynamics is up-to-date and accurate.

You might want to use this command after a significant map change, a rebalancing of diplomatic relations/networks, or when you have recently changed or updated your ideas and want the game to reflect those changes accurately.

How to Open the Command Console

In EU4, cheats are executed from the command console, a text box that you type commands into.

To open the command console press the ~(tilde) key, which is typically located under ESC (escape).

If your keyboard does not have that key, or pressing ~ does not work, try the following keys:

  • ~
  • SHIFT + 2
  • SHIFT + 3
  • ALT + 2 + 1

Type your command into the console, and then press ENTER .
